Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

The biggest direct impact we can make to reduce our environmental impact is to reduce our level of wastage or resources, prolong the life of our products through reuse, or recycle end of life material into a feed stream for new products.

The Comet Circle™

For the Ricoh Group to become the type of organization we envision, not only does the Group need to realize change towards the creation of a sustainable society but society as a whole also needs to realize such change. In 1994, Ricoh established the Comet Circle™ as the basis to encourage such change. The Comet Circle™ expresses the greater picture of our environmental impact reduction scheme, which includes not only the scope of the Ricoh Group as a manufacturer and sales company but also the entire lifecycle of our products, including upstream and downstream of our business activities. Being well aware that product manufacturers like Ricoh, because of their involvement in the early phases of a product's lifecycle, can make the greatest contribution to reducing environmental impact, we engage in all business taking into account the Comet Circle™.

Zero-Waste-to-Landfill

Zero-Waste-to-Landfill activities are carried out at Ricoh's sites all over the world.

The Ricoh Group defines Zero-Waste-to-Landfill as a 100% resource recovery rate, or no waste used as landfill. Zero-Waste-to-Landfill was achieved at its major production sites in Japan in March 2001 and at production sites outside of Japan in March 2002. Thus, the Group achieved Zero-Waste-to-Landfill at all its major global production sites.

Since then, these activities have been promoted at non-production sites worldwide and at companies that have newly joined the Group. At sites that have already achieved Zero-Waste-to-Landfill, efforts are being made to raise the level of Zero-Waste-to-Landfill, including controlling the volume generated and the conversion of waste into useful materials, under the concepts of sustainable environmental management.

Life Cycle Solutions

Ricoh has adopted resource conservation and recycling as one of the pillars of our environmental conservation activities and has been working on the recycling of used copiers, laser printers, toner cartridges, and supplies.

Recycling of Used Machines

Ricoh Hong Kong actively collects used machines from customers and conducts reconditioning of copiers in response to market demand for recycled copiers. The ultimate objective is to minimize waste disposal and to prolong the life span of the products.

Toner Bottles Recycling

Ricoh is dedicated to perform the full-scale collection of all used toner cartridges and toner bottles to reduce waste. Selected model of the used bottles are cleaned and refilled with new toner. The quality of the recycled toner is guaranteed to the highest standards. Those bottles or cartridges that cannot be recycled will be sent to the recycler for materials recycling.

Recycling of Plastics

The plastic parts of end-of-life products are sorted and crushed by grade and mixed with virgin plastics to be reused in Ricoh products. Ricoh’s recycled plastic parts contain up to 20% to 30% recycled materials. Recycled materials are reused in Ricoh products and other plastic products manufacturing such as toys or small electric appliances in Japan and China.

The Ricoh Toner Bottle and Cartridge Recycling Program

As a customer, you can now help to clean up the world by taking part in Ricoh's Toner Bottle and Cartridge Recycling Program. Ricoh will collect the used bottles and cartridges from all Ricoh fax, printers and MFPs and we will refill the toner bottles and recycle cartridges to minimize wastes.

Each returned toner bottle is cleaned and remanufactured as a new toner bottle in our factory. The quality of the new bottle will be guaranteed.

What to do for Collection:

Remove the specified used bottles or cartridge from the machine and place it into the plastic bag of the new Ricoh toner bottles or cartridge and seal the plastic bag.
Put the plastic bag with the used bottle or cartridge in the new bottle or cartridge box together with other packaging materials. Seal the box with tape.
